EC: Commissioners promise action to protect workers

A total ban on smoking in workplaces could be a reality throughout the EU by 2010.

Two European Commissioners (Commissioner Vassiliou and Commissioner Špidla) are working on an amendment to protect workers from passive smoking, which could pave the way for a complete ban on smoking in the hospitality sector throughout the EU. The Commissioners are thus placing countries like Austria under pressure to do something about their lax regulations. Commissioner Vassiliou said that she encouraged all countries to follow the excellent examples of Ireland, Italy, Sweden, UK, France and Slovenia. She added that a Council recommendation on smoke-free workplaces could even come out before the end of 2008. She commented that, together with Commissioner Špidla, she was launching an initiative to amend existing legislation.

Already in 2007 the European Parliament had officially called upon the European Commission to propose legislation obliging all employers to make workplaces completely smoke-free.
